Also known as double shot, two-shot, or 2K molding, this process uses a servo-driven rotary platen to transfer the first-shot part to a second cavity, where a second injection unit adds the next material and the two bond during molding. This replaces separate molding, assembly, and bonding with a single step, lowering per-part cost and improving bond strength and finish.
Because even small misalignment between shots causes colour bleed or weak bond lines, rotary platen positioning accuracy directly determines part quality. The DM III line places main and auxiliary injection units in a parallel, dedicated arrangement: the toggle DM III (168–568T) carries 4 patented rotary platen technologies and ±0.2% injection accuracy, and the SM-TP-DM III Two-Platen (750–1900T) carries an ABB servo rotary platen accurate to 0.005° with rotary table load capacity up to 16 tonnes.
The DMZ III line (168–750T) is a back-loading modular system in which the auxiliary unit stacks on the main unit, available in three-platen (168–468T) and two-platen (550–750T) configurations, with an independent servo-driven rotary platen (±0.005°) and standard e-Drive™ electric melt. Both lines support three or more materials on multi-station turntables.

Choose by part size first, then layout: below 468 tonnes, pick between the dedicated DM III and the compact, energy-saving JM-DMZ III; from 550 to 750 tonnes the SM-NTP-DMZ III covers the range; above 750 tonnes the SM-TP-DM III covers it. All four machines switch between single-colour and multi-colour production.
The two materials must be compatible in both adhesion and processing temperature. The most common combinations are hard plastic with soft rubber (PP + TPE, ABS + TPE, PC + TPE) for grip and sealing applications, and same-base-resin colour combinations (PP + PP in different colours, ABS + ABS) for aesthetic parts.
Other proven combinations include PC + ABS, PA + TPE, and PBT + TPE.
